FOIFT, AG’s Office hosts open government seminars in El Paso, Houston area

The Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas is partnering with the Attorney General’s Office to host two open government seminars in El Paso and the Houston area in May.

The one-day seminars — designed for government employees, journalists, attorneys and members of the general public who want to learn more about the Texas Public Information Act and Texas Open Meetings Act — will take place on May 3 in Conroe and May 10 in El Paso.

The Conroe event will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 3 at Lone Star College-Montgomery, 3200 College Park. The AG’s office will begin the day with training on the Texas Public Information Act at 9 a.m. followed by training on TPIA cost rules. Those sessions are free and conclude at 11:30 a.m.

At 1 p.m., the FOI Foundation will present a session on the Texas Open Meetings Act by attorney Joe Larsen, a foundation board member. Admission for this session costs $50.

Supporting the FOI Foundation as sponsors of the seminar are the Houston Chronicle and IntegrityTitle.com.

The El Paso event will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 10 at the El Paso Independent School District’s Professional Development Center, 6500-K Boeing Drive. The AG’s office will begin with free training on the Texas Public Information Act followed by training on TPIA cost rules. The free sessions conclude at 11:30 a.m.

At 1 p.m., the FOI Foundation will present a session on the Texas Open Meetings Act by attorney Thomas Williams, the foundation’s vice president. Admission for this session costs $50.

Supporting the FOI Foundation as sponsors of the seminar are the El Paso Times, IntegrityTitle.com and the law firm Windle, Hood, Norton, Brittain & Jay, LLP.

The seminars meet the state requirements for open government training for public officials and qualify for continuing legal education credit through the State Bar of Texas.
