Elias Sports Bureau changes a statistic in Texans’ season-opening win

The Elias Sports Bureau changed a statistic in Sunday’s game that benefits the Texans. They called Ryan Fitzpatrick’s 5-yard sack an aborted play. That means Fitzpatrick wasn’t sacked in the 17-6 victory over Washington.

His pass protectors would like to make sure they keep him clean at Oakland, and that’s fine with Fitzpatrick.

“We’ve got a good group,” he said about his linemen. “Those guys work hard, and it was nice to have everyone out there working together.”

Tackles Duane Brown and Derek Newton, guards Ben Jones and Brandon Brooks and center Chris Myers went the distance.

Newton, who played hurt last season and didn’t play well, had a terrific performance. Fitzpatrick dropped back 26 times and threw 22 passes, and Newton didn’t let his man get within breathing distance of his quarterback.

“Those guys fight hard, and that’s really all you can ask as a quarterback,” Fitzpatrick said. “They’re going to give it their all. They work hard every day whether it’s in practice, getting treatment (or) in the film room. That’s all you ask of those guys.”
