Support available for survivors of sexual assault

Originally published by Adam Faderewski.

The Texas Equal Access to Justice Foundatiuon’s Legal Aid for Survivors of Sexual Assault is providing free legal help to assist with legal issues stemming from sexual assault—such as privacy, safety, housing, family law, immigration, medical/mental health services, and sexual violence in the workplace or educational institution.

Survivors can receive help by calling 844-303-SAFE (7233), Option 1, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Callers will be connected with a network of nine legal associations and may remain anonymous—callers need not have reported an assault to law enforcement.

“During these times of uncertainty, programs like LASSA are a vital lifeline for clients,” said Betty Balli Torres, executive director of the Texas Access to Justice Foundation, in a press release. “However, resources for this work were inadequate to address the needs before the exponential loss of resources brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.”

An emergency legal aid fund has been started at teajf.org/donate/Emergency-Legal-Aid-Fund.apsx. For more information about the Texas Access to Justice Foundation, go to teajf.org.
