Editor’s note: The following message was sent to State Bar of Texas members on August 21.
This message includes updated information related to the COVID-19 pandemic as well as other State Bar updates. We hope this message finds you and your loved ones safe and healthy.
2021 State Bar of Texas Election
The Nominations and Elections Subcommittee voted today to recommend the nomination of E. Leon Carter of Dallas and Laura Gibson of Houston as candidates for 2021-2022 State Bar of Texas president-elect, after interviewing nine potential nominees.
The State Bar Board of Directors will consider the recommendations at its quarterly meeting on September 25 via videoconference. The meeting will be live streamed at youtube.com/statebaroftexas. If the board approves their nominations, Carter and Gibson would appear on the ballot in April 2021 along with any certified petition candidates.
Potential petition candidates can begin collecting signatures on September 1, 2020, and have until March 1, 2021, to submit their nominating petitions to the State Bar for certification. For information on how to run for president-elect, go here.
This year, the subcommittee considered candidates from metropolitan counties, in compliance with State Bar rules. Click on the names below to read the potential nominees’ interest letters to the Nominations and Elections Subcommittee.

Board of Directors Special Meeting
The State Bar of Texas Board of Directors set a special meeting for September 10 to consider a tabled motion to restrict the duties of the bar’s president and other matters. An agenda for the meeting will be posted to texasbar.com/bodmaterials once finalized.
The meeting will occur via videoconference and be broadcast live on the State Bar’s YouTube page. Individuals who wish to speak during the public comment portion of the meeting must sign up before 5 p.m. CDT Wednesday, September 9 by emailing amy.starnes@texasbar.com or by calling 800-204-2222 ext. 1706. Written comments to the board may be sent to boardofdirectors@texabar.com and must be received by 5 p.m. CDT September 3 for timely distribution to the board members.

Nominations Sought for At-Large Director
The State Bar of Texas is accepting nominations through December 1 for an at-large director position on the board of directors. Four at-large positions are appointed by the State Bar president subject to board confirmation. One position will become vacant in 2021. At-large directors serve three-year terms. The term begins June 17, 2021.
In making the appointments, the president is required to appoint directors who demonstrate knowledge gained from experience in the legal profession and community necessary to ensure the board represents the interests of attorneys from the varied backgrounds that compose the membership of the State Bar of Texas.

Supreme Court of Texas Emergency Order
The Supreme Court of Texas issued its 24th Emergency Order on August 21. The order extends limitations on residential-eviction proceedings filed from March 27 through September 30.

We invite you to take advantage of the well-being resources for remote living collected by the Texas Lawyers’ Assistance Program and to join us at noon CDT on August 26 as part of TLAP’s Monthly Well-Being Wednesday series via Zoom. The session will be “What Lawyers and Law Students Need to Know About Stress and OCD” and will provide 1 hour of ethics CLE in Texas. Speakers include Chad Brandt, a licensed clinical psychologist with an OCD specialty, and Sofia Chapman, associate dean for student life and director of diversity at Texas Tech University School of Law.
