3 Most Common Medical Identity Thefts

Originally published by Bob Kraft.

Identity theft is a major problem that is often noticed when it’s too late. In general, people only notice it when the damage has been done, and there’s no salvaging what has been lost. Whether it’s the usual identity theft when people steal your personal information and your credit card information and use your credit card to pay for whatever they want, or if it’s medical identity theft where people use your identity to purchase drugs, go to surgeries (cosmetic mostly). It’s an issue because people can lose their medical insurance and various other things because someone stole their identity. And it’s not easy protecting it either; even if you take care of everything, there’s still a chance that someone manages to steal it. In the end, the most you can do is give your best to protect your identity and hope no one makes a move. If they do, contact the authorities immediately!

Here are the 3 most common medical identity thefts

Health insurance scams

Most people in the United States have health insurance that covers most of the costs of surgeries and other things. However, most scammers prey on vulnerable people so they can steal money from them. The most often used way of scamming people for their money through health insurance is offering them a deal that is incredibly inviting and beneficial to the person. The person (unknowingly) signs the deal and provides the scammer with his personal information which the scammer can use to his advantage. The victim is left without both health insurance and money (in the best case scenario). It’s also fairly common for people to make mistakes by connecting their credit cards to high risk credit card processing websites without checking if the website is trusted.

Medical scams

Medical scams are less common but equally devastating. They are based on the (incorrect) belief that there are miracle cures out there. People sometimes fall for these tricks if the person scamming them knows what he or she is doing. For example, maybe you’re suffering from incredibly painful headaches. Nothing you use helps you deal with them, and you don’t know what to do. Suddenly, a miracle cure appears that claims to help with all kinds of headaches and, even if it costs a bit more, you are convinced that it’s true. So you pay money for this cure, and you can’t wait to take it. Lo and behold, the cure is a lie, and it doesn’t do you any good. Thus, you paid a lot of money to a scammer. Don’t fall for such tricks and do your research!

Health care laws

Certain health care laws can be abused by scammers that use these laws to their advantage. They might come knocking on your door or calling you on the phone to ask for your personal information because their ‘database has been deleted and they need to remake it’ or anything similar. Be very careful and always ask for ID and proof that what they’re asking for is justified and legal.
