Dallas Young Lawyers to host panel for suicide prevention

Originally published by Jillian Beck.

With September marking National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, the Dallas Association of Young Lawyers is hosting a panel to bring attention to the mental health issues many lawyers face and combat the stigma associated with suicide.

Lawyers experience depression and mental health issues at a much higher rate than those in other professions, according to a recent landmark study by the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation and the American Bar Association Commission on Lawyer Assistance Programs. Of the nearly 11,500 legal practitioners that were surveyed from across the country, about 11 percent reported having suicidal thoughts during the span of their careers.

Two DAYL members will share their own personal stories related to suicide at the event.

Panelist Bree Buchanan, director of the Texas Lawyers’ Assistance Program of the State Bar of Texas, will share information about available resources dealing with suicide to assist attorneys, and Candice Conner, a personal counselor and also a panelist, will discuss warning signs of suicide and ways to help colleagues who might be at risk.

DAYL-Seal-300x250The panel—which will provide attendees with one hour of ethics CLE credit—is planned for noon on September 20 at the Belo Mansion at 2101 Ross Ave. in Dallas.

To sign up for the panel, go to the Dallas Association of Young Lawyers website.
