FDA Investigates WEN by Chaz Dean Hair Products

On July 7, 2016, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it was launching an investigation into consumer complaints that WEN by Chaz Dean hair products caused hair loss and other adverse side effects. The FDA said that it had received 127 adverse event reports from consumers about WEN by Chaz Dean Cleansing Conditioner products.  The FDA said this was the largest number of consumer complaints ever received by the agency for a hair product. In addition, the FDA said that it is also investigating more than 21,000 consumer complaints directed to Chaz Dean, Inc. and Guthy Renker, LLC, the manufacturer of the WEN hair products at issue.  The FDA said it learned of the additional consumer complaints during an inspection of the companies’ manufacturing and distribution facilities. WEN by Chaz Dean products have become popular through celebrity endorsements as well as television infomercials.  The products are said to be all-natural, inspired by the herbs in celebrity hairstylist Chaz Dean’s garden. Consumers using the WEN by Chaz Dean Cleansing Conditioner products have complained of extensive hair loss, bald spots, scalp burns, itching and rashes.  One class action lawsuit filed on behalf of 200 WEN by Chaz Dean Cleansing Conditioner product users alleges that the group lost one-quarter to one-third of their hair after using the products.  The suit alleges that the companies knew of the adverse reactions and continued to sell the product without taken any corrective actions.
