How did ‘Hard Knocks’ exposure affect J.J. Watt’s jersey sales?

Originally published by Greg Rajan.

For five weeks this NFL offseason, J.J. Watt and the Texans had the “Hard Knocks” spotlight on HBO.

It was part of an offseason that saw Watt increase his national profile with a sitcom cameo, late-night talk show appearances and rubbing elbows with the likes of Jennifer Aniston and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

But has “Hard Knocks” translated into more jersey sales? Not according to some new figures released Thursday.

The NFL’s online store released its top-selling jerseys for the first two weeks of the regular season and Watt dipped from No. 6 in the June rankings to out of the top 10.

Patriots QB Tom Brady hardly had his jersey sales tainted by the “Deflategate” scandal, as he remained No. 1. Meanwhile, three Dallas Cowboys players made big jumps into the top 10.
