What if? Rethinking some Texans first-round draft picks

Originally published by Ultimate Texans.

The fun part of the NFL draft is that drafting is an inexact science. Guys who are supposed to be sure things don’t pan out at all while longshots sometimes find their way to stardom.

The Texans’ draft history, particularly in the first round, is chock full of big hits and giant misses.

Something else that comes with the draft is second-guessing, as in why did you take that player instead of this one? So indulge us as we play a game of what-if with some Texans first-round picks over the years.

We didn’t need a do-over for 2003 (Andre Johnson), 2008 (Duane Brown) and 2011 (J.J. Watt) because, let’s face it, it’s hard to imagine the Texans getting more value than they did from those slots in the draft.

And we left out their 2012-14 first-rounders (Whitney Mercilus, DeAndre Hopkins and Jadeveon Clowney). While some may be willing to write off one or all of them as busts, it’s probably too soon to reach a conclusion either way.

But other years? They’re fair game.
