The Texans made it official, revamping their coaching staff with the announcement of three previously reported hires.
On Friday, the Texans officially named Larry Izzo special teams coach, Sean Ryan receivers coach and Anthony Weaver defensive line coach.
Former Rice standout Larry Izzo takes over as special teams coordinator, replacing Bob Ligashesky. A former Pro Bowl special-teams ace with the New England Patriots, Izzo, 41, was a running back and linebacker who was The Chronicle Two-Way Player of the Year at McCullough School in The Woodlands. Izzo was previously the New York Giants assistant special teams coach for the past five seasons. He was a three-time Pro Bowl selection.
Ryan was the receivers coach for the Giants, coaching Pro Bowl wide receiver and former NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Odell Beckham Jr. Now he’ll coach Texans Pro Bowl wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins.
Weaver was the Cleveland Browns defensive line coach and replaces Paul Pasqualoni who resigned to spend more time with his family on the East Coast. Weaver is a former Baltimore Ravens and Texans defensive lineman. He played seven seasons in the NFL and recorded 260 career tackles and 15.5 sacks. Weaver, 35, was an All-American at Notre Dame.
The Texans retained linebackers coach Mike Vrabel, convincing him to remain in Houston and agreeing to a contract that included a raise as he declined an offer from Chip Kelly to become the San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator.
