J.J. Watt named Sporting News’ Defensive Player of the Year

Texans defensive end J.J. Watt has been named the Sporting News’ Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.

Watt, who led the league with 17 1/2 sacks, received 116 votes. Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly finished second with 113 votes.

The rest of the Sporting News’ awards:

Offensive Player of the Year: Panthers quarterback Cam Newton.

Coach of the Year: Panthers’ Ron Rivera.

Comeback Player of the Year: Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer.

Rookie Player of the Year: Rams running back Todd Gurley.
