Did You Know? – Briefs Files in Texas Appellate Courts are Now Automatically Hyperlinked

As lawyers continue to adjust their briefing practices to account for the increasing likelihood they will be read on a computer or tablet, rather than on paper, another point to take into consideration is that the Texas Appeals Management & E-Filing System (TAMES) now automatically inserts hyperlinks to the Westlaw version of most cases and statutes cited in documents designated as “Briefs” and filed in text-searchable pdf. The hyperlinks are for the courts’ internal use only and do not appear on the version of the document available on the public docket system. It is important to note that, at this time, Lexis does not have the same functionality; so if you are citing to an unpublished opinion and want it to be available to the court via hyperlink, you should include a Westlaw cite.
