Man Awarded $289 Million in Damages from Monsanto for Roundup-Related Cancer

Last week, a jury awarded $289 million to a groundskeeper who worked with Monsanto’s weed-killer, Roundup, because of its ability to cause cancer. The verdict paves the way for additional Roundup lawsuits.

Details of the Monsanto Roundup Lawsuit

According to FOX Business, Dewayne “Lee” Johnson became sick with non-Hodgkin lymphoma after using Roundup for two years as a groundskeeper for a school district outside of San Francisco. The California jury concluded that Monsanto’s weed-killer put Johnson, who is now terminally ill at age 46, in danger of severe health complications.

It is the belief of the jury that the company either knew, or should have known, about the health risks of the weed-killer.

There are thousands of people looking to sue Monsanto under similar allegations, for which Johnson’s case has now opened the floodgates.

There is another case, brought by Aaron Johnson, a 48 year-old macadamia nut farm manager. In 2014, he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma after using Monsanto’s weed-killer for over 12 years, and is looking to sue the company.

Despite the verdict in Dewayne “Lee” Johnson’s case, and the impending lawsuits, Monsanto Vice President Scott Partridge it “does not change the fact that more than 800 scientific studies and reviews – and conclusions by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. National Institutes of Health and regulatory authorities around the world – support the fact that glyphosate does not cause cancer, and did not cause Mr. Johnson’s cancer.”

Monsanto is planning to appeal the decision next month.

Verdict Could Open Way for Pending Lawsuits

Monsanto’s history with this chemical, and information revealed from the company’s internal records is detailed in the new book “Whitewash,” written by investigative journalist Carey Gillam. Gillam says that the company’s attempt to cover up studies connecting the chemical with cancer is now in the public spotlight.

Due to this case, and the 4,000 other impending cases, Bayer, the new owner of Monsanto, may have to pay out hundreds of millions if not billions of dollars in damages.
