Representatives of the Texas Access to Justice Foundation and Texas Access to Justice Commission, state government, and the Texas Supreme Court spoke about the importance of improving low-income Texans and veterans’ access to civil legal help at a breakfast January 26 at the Capitol.
State Rep. Sarah Davis, who serves as a liaison to the Texas Access to Justice Commission, and Texas Supreme Court Justice Jeff Brown emphasized the significance of access to justice efforts and the work of the foundation and commission as well as volunteer attorneys across Texas.
“They ensure access to justice is a reality for all Texans, not just the ones who can afford it,” Brown said.
Texas Access to Justice Commissioner Harriet Miers discussed the role of lawyers in meeting the high demand of pro bono help, donating millions of dollars and hours of service.
Texas Access to Justice Foundation Executive Director Betty Balli Torres and Texas Access to Justice Commission Executive Director Trish McAllister informed attendees about the organizations’ legislative priorities going into the session dealing with funding and assisting more low-income Texans and veterans with getting the legal help they need.
The Texas Access to Justice Foundation and the Texas Access to Justice Commission are entities of the Texas Supreme Court.
