Raizner Slania Files Concussion Lawsuit On Behalf Of Former Berkeley Football Player

Raizner Slania filed a concussion lawsuit on behalf of a former University of California, Berkeley football player against the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the PAC-12 Conference for failing to implement reasonable standards for the treatment of concussions. The NCAA and the PAC-12 failed to properly educate players of the risks and long-term effects of repeated impacts to the head and failed to provide medical treatment that could lessen the severity of head injuries sustained during play.

The plaintiff played for the University of California, Berkeley from 1970 to 1971 as a middle linebacker. He suffered many concussions during his time at the university. Specifically, he remembers sustaining a concussion during a game against the University of Texas where he was hit so hard it “rattled” his neck and cracked the side of his helmet. This hit caused him to develop severe and recurring headaches.

Although the plaintiff sustained repetitive concussive hits in practices and games, the NCAA and the PAC-12 failed to adopt or implement adequate concussion management safety protocols or return to play guidelines during his time on the football team. The plaintiff was repeatedly deprived of the medical treatment necessary to monitor, manage, and mitigate risks associated with traumatic brain injuries (TBIs).

As a result of his time playing football for the university, the plaintiff now suffers from dementia, severe headaches, loss of memory, and other debilitating health issues.

The NCAA, its universities, and its conferences have a responsibility to safeguard the health of student-athletes. Unfortunately, they put profits ahead of students by failing to provide necessary care and failing to educate student-athletes about the long-term effects of concussions.
