Beware of Dangerous Recalled Products at Thrift Stores & Resale Shops

Thrift shops and resale stores have become phenomenally popular in recent years, and many people may be unknowingly re-selling items that are unsafe and have been recalled, which is against the law. According to the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008, selling recalled products is a crime. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warns consumers and re-sellers about the following items: Cribs – the sale of recalled cribs or those that fail to meet the new federal standard is prohibited. Most cribs manufactured prior to June 2011 may not be resold. Toys – toys with small parts that are a choking hazard or those that contain magnets or magnetic components that can be swallowed and cause internal injuries is prohibited. Lead – children’s metal jewelry as well as painted wood or metal toys may contain high levels of lead and should not be re-sold. Durable infant and toddler products — walkers, bath seats, play yards, bed rails and other durable infant and toddler products that are missing parts or are unstable may not be re-sold. The CPSC has published a Resellers Guide that identifies the types of products that cannot be re-sold.
