The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a warning about safety issues related to Samsung top-loading washing machines made between March 2011 and April 2016 following several reports of the washers exploding while in use. The CPSC warned consumers with Samsung top-loading washing machines to use only the delicate cycle when washing bedding or other bulky items. The lower spin speed on the delicate cycle “lessens the risk of impact injuries or property damage due to the washing machine becoming dislodged,” according to the CPSC. Reports of the Samsung washers exploding have some from several states, including Texas. The most recent report came from homeowners in Plano, Texas, who said they were watching TV when they heard a blast from the laundry room “like a sonic boom.” They said the top of the washer had blown off, the sides were warped and flying debris caused damage to several other appliances and knocked a hole in the wall of their laundry room. A federal class action lawsuit has been filed in New Jersey by consumers who said their machines had blown up while in use. One plaintiff, a woman in McAllen, Texas, said that her Samsung washing machine “exploded with such ferocity that it penetrated the interior wall of her garage.” The CPSC said it was working with Samsung on a remedy for affected consumers to ensure no further incidents and that anyone who has experienced this problem should report the incident to CPSC on its website, SaferProducts.gov.
