Reputation Management: What to do After Your Business Has Been Through Legal Trouble

Originally published by Bob Kraft.

If your business has recently gotten into some legal trouble, do not despair. These situations often do a lot of damage to reputations and brands, but they do not do anything that cannot be fixed with the proper steps. Use these tips to help your business get its reputation back after a bout of legal issues.

Invest in PR

This is the first, and possibly most important, step in helping your reputation recover. Even if your public relations department was alright before, you will need to reinvest in this section of your business to get your good name back.

A legal struggle can often destroy consumers’ trust in a brand, which is exactly why PR is so important at this stage. Do not be afraid to bring some new blood into your company. The only stipulation is that they need to be qualified to help recreate your brand. Consider taking in some professionals with at least a master’s in PR, as they will know how best to help your business.

Own Your Mistakes

It will not be possible for your business to move on from your past if you never acknowledge it. By releasing a public statement apologizing for any wrongdoing and showing real change in how your business operates, you will be able to get your consumers to have faith in you again. It may take time, but ignoring the problem will only be used to destroy your character later.

This is an excellent time to use your new PR staff. Let them craft a message that shows that your business is not only apologetic, but is ready to move on from the legal incident. If you have hired the right people, then they will certainly be able to paint your business in the right light.

The final step of owning your mistakes is changing what allowed them to happen. Make radical changes in your business practices; not only because you want to avoid this issue again, but to show the public you have changed. This is the best thing that you can do to get your previous standing back.

Conclusion

These things happen to a lot of businesses, but that is no reason to let them stand in the way of your success. Mistakes happen, but moving on from them is the mark of a true success story. Revitalize your PR company and business practices, and you will soon find that your brand is stronger than ever before.
