Lawsuits Brought by Graduates Accuse Law Schools of Fraud

The AP reports some law school graduates have filed lawsuits against the law schools they attended claiming the schools defrauded them by lying about their prospects for passing the bar exam and gaining employment as a lawyer. While many of the lawsuits have been dismissed, some suggest the publicity from the cases is putting pressure on law schools to be more transparent. Kyle McEntee, the executive director of a nonprofit group not involved in the lawsuits called Law School Transparency, says, “[Law] schools are setting up a lot of people to fail.” The latest lawsuit was brought by 12 former students against Thomas Jefferson Law School in San Diego. Brian Procel, the plaintiffs’ attorney in that case, claims the law school lied about employment prospects by including “non-legal work such as a pool cleaner and a sales clerk at Victoria’s Secret” in their job placement rates and destroying documents that “reflected a more accurate employment picture.”
