The State Bar of Texas Women and the Law Section is now accepting submissions from current Texas law students for the 2021 Texas Law Student Writing Competition.
Students entering the competition should submit an essay of 2,500 words or less on a topic that identifies and analyzes a legal challenge for women in Texas and/or the United States based on recent news reports. The essay should be written in the style of an op-ed that would be read by the general public and identify the following three questions: (1) What is the challenge? How are women harmed? (2) What is the relevant law(s)? and (3) How should the challenge be addressed?
Submissions are due by February 28, 2021, and should be emailed to Women and the Law Section Chair Teresa Schiller at sbotwomenandthelaw@gmail.com with the subject line “WAL Student Writing Competition.”
Essays will be evaluated on legal reasoning, readability, thoroughness, timeliness of topic, organizational structure, Bluebook citation, and grammar.
The student who places first, as judged by the section, will receive the Harriet E. Miers Writing Competition Award, which includes $1,000 payable to the student for law school educational expenses. The section will publish the student’s essay in its newsletter.
The Harriet E. Miers Award honors Miers, who served as White House counsel to President George W. Bush and was the first woman elected president of the State Bar of Texas.
The second-place finisher will receive $500 payable to the student for law school educational expenses. The section will publish the student’s essay in its newsletter.
The Texas Law Student Writing Competition was established to help participating Texas law school students to prepare to tackle legal and societal challenges after graduation and strengthen their written advocacy skills; increase awareness of and involvement with the Women and the Law Section; and to further the section’s mission.
