A coalition was formed to help greater Houston area residents who need legal assistance regarding evictions after the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act’s eviction protection expired on July 26.
The Houston Bar Association, Houston Volunteer Lawyers, Houston Lawyer Referral Service, Dispute Resolution Center, Lone Star Legal Aid, South Texas College of Law Houston, Thurgood Marshall School of Law Earl Carl Institute for Legal and Social Policy, and the University of Houston Law Center have formed the eviction assistance coalition.
For information on free legal representation for low-income persons, a self-representation toolkit, mediation, lawyer referrals, and more, go to HBA.org/Evictions.
To apply for legal assistance through HVL, use the online intake form or call 713-228-0735.
Applicants should be prepared to give information about their case to the fullest, including an eviction case number, if available.
All applicants will be required to provide identification and proof of income. Certain exceptions to residence and income requirements may apply to special groups such as veterans—go to the How to Get Help page at MakeJusticeHappen.org. A legal caseworker will notify each applicant if other documents are required.
If an application is accepted, HVL will try to place the case with a volunteer attorney. Translators and other accommodation requests can be made by calling 713-228-0735 or emailing info@hvlp.org.
