Texas Supreme Court Justice Paul W. Green has announced that he plans to retire on August 31, 2020. Green has served on the Supreme Court since January 2005.
Green is second in seniority on the court, having been elected in November 2004 after 10 years on the 4th Court of Appeals in San Antonio. Green’s term is set to expire on December 31, 2022; Gov. Greg Abbott will choose his successor.
“It is a decision filled with competing sentiments, mostly in the fact that I feel very close to all of you and will miss you every day after I leave … I hope to see you soon. In person!” Green said in a statement to Supreme Court staff.
“In Paul Green’s more than 15 years’ service on the Supreme Court, he has consistently provided steady, insightful, and wise counsel to his colleagues and to the judiciary—and certainly to me in his role for the past seven years as senior justice,” Chief Justice Nathan L. Hecht said in a press release.“To say he will be missed is an understatement for someone who has given a lifetime of dedication to the profession and to public service.”
Justice Green served as president of the San Antonio Bar Association, on the State Bar of Texas Board of Directors, and as a member of the House of Delegates of the American Bar Association. He is a member of the American Law Institute and a life fellow of the Austin, San Antonio, Texas, and American bar foundations. Green has been honored by St. Mary’s University School of Law as a distinguished graduate and as a recipient of the Rosewood Gavel Award for achievement in the judiciary.
