NY DA Demands New Software To Ban Texting While Driving

Nassau County, New York District Attorney Kathleen Rice called on smartphone makers to install software of cell phones that would lock ignitions if it detected a driver was on his cell phone. Of course it’s not clear what the software is supposed to do if the driver starts texting as he is driving 60 miles per hour.

Rice also requested that insurance companies off incentives and discounts for customers who obey the law in New York which prohibits this insanely dangerous practice.

Rice noted that texting and driving is just as dangerous as drunken driving and is much more common among young people.

The DA added that her office will seek sentences that require such software blocking technology for persons who have been convicted of any offense involving a texting violation. She wants law enforcement officers to cite motorists for violating the law against texting, even when the motorists are already facing more serious charges, such as reckless driving. Rice said her proposals “can save lives and should be considered without delay.”

I applaud Ms. Rice for her bold recommendations and hope that they are implemented. Here are some previous posts.
