Houston Volunteer Lawyers received a $19,547 grant from the Texas Bar Foundation, allowing the program to enhance its web-based pro bono volunteer training materials.
“We will be able to provide [better and more interactive content] to all our volunteers working on pro bono cases as a result of this grant from the Texas Bar Foundation,” HVL Executive Director Michael Hofrichter said in a press release. “This means that more clients will get the help that they need.”
The grant will expand HVL’s volunteer portal with an online learning management system, or LMS, that will offer individualized courses and materials on topics tied to the pro bono cases HVL offers. The program will add to its existing course content, as well create new content on topics such as how to take a case and handling divorces and divorce temporary orders hearings.
The upgrades made possible by the grant will not replace HVL’s current CLE program—rather it will transform the manner in which HVL shares its materials, including recordings of live courses.
The grant will result in volunteers more comfortable with their pro bono cases and willing to take on more, Hofrichter said.
“Supporting HVL’s volunteers is the reason we exist,” he said. “Whenever we [can] improve [both volunteer] knowledge and resources [that] help pro bono clients, we hope to make a difference in that client’s outcome and that volunteer’s desire for continued pro bono work.

The Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program, an initiative of the Dallas Bar Association and Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas, is hosting 7 free legal clinics for county residents who meet financial guidelines. The clinics, which will be held throughout December, will offer legal advice and consultation in civil matters.
